Are you considering adopting a Greyhound for the first time?

Every breed of dog, and mutts, are wonderful. But each type of dog is different and bred for specific characteristics. The trick to enjoying a happy life with a canine companion is choosing the kind of dog that fits your home and lifestyle.

Everyone at GPA/Three Rivers Greyhounds adores their pet Greyhound(s) and think they make excellent pets for many familes, but they aren't for everyone. Before you seriously consider adopting a Greyhound, begin with this excellent short article which discusses the pros and cons of hound ownership that will help inform you about whether they would be right for you or not. And read one of the books we recommend below. Our adoption interview also includes a discussion about whether a Greyhound is a good choice for you.

What is the Procedure for Adopting a Greyhound from Three Rivers Greyhounds?

Complete and submit or mail the online application to GPA/Three Rivers Greyhounds. Once the application is reviewed, you will be interviewed by phone. The next step will be a home visit. The adoption counselor will schedule a home visit with the entire potential adoptive family. If requested, the adoption counselor will bring one of their own pet Greyhounds to the home visit. In bringing a Greyhound into your house you can see their temperament with everyone and everything in the home. You have the chance to ask any questions regarding Greyhounds that you can think of. You also see the size of a Greyhound in your house and also what may have to be dog-proofed before a Greyhound can live there. You will then shortly hear from the adoption counselor to let you know if you have been approved. Following approval for adoption and a successful home visit, you will have to obtain the necessary adoption "equipment" - a large bed, raised bowls, etc. Finally, you will visit the adoption location - Tan-Zar Kennels - to select a Greyhound.

How Much Does it Cost to Adopt a Greyhound?

A donation of $250 per Greyhound is required, which includes the costs of neutering, parasite testing, flea and tick treatment, vaccinations, transportation and grooming. An identification tag, a martingale collar, and a leash is also included in the donation.

How Long is the Adoption Process?

After an adoption application is received, it is processed as soon as possible. Availability of Greyhounds for adoption varies depending on when they are released by racetracks and breeders. Usually, there are a small number of Greyhounds available for adoption at all times. Contact GPA/TRG for additional information and with questions concerning adoptions.

Greyhound Adoption Books

There are excellent books with additional information to help you decide if a Greyhound is the right choice for you. We recommend reading

  • "Adopting The Retired Racing Greyhound" by Cynthia Branigan

  • "Retired Racing Greyhounds For Dummies" by Lee Livingood

  • "Greyhounds" by Carolyn Coille

  • "Childproofing Your Dog" by Brian Kilcommons

What is the GPA/Three Rivers Greyhounds Adoption Philosophy?

In compliance with the Greyhound Pets of America Code of Ethics, which governs the adoption of retired racing Greyhounds, GPA/TRG is committed to ensuring that the quality of homes found will take precedence over the quantity of Greyhounds placed.

What is the Benefit of Fostering Greyhounds in an Adoption Kennel?

All Greyhounds come to the GPA/TRG adoption kennel from racing kennels, making the initial transition from racetrack to retirement relatively stress-free. Each Greyhound resides in an adoption kennel until it is placed in a home for the first time. This eliminates the need for the Greyhound to adjust to multiple changes in environments required when moving from a foster home to a permanent home, or to another foster home. Greyhounds are born and raised in kennels and thrive in the kennel environment.
